Christmas this year was different for many reasons. First of all, it was the first one we've spent away from our families. We missed them terribly! Second, it was the first Christmas we got to celebrate with our son. Having a quiet Christmas here really did seem magical. We weren't rushing around trying to visit everyone or cooking a big meal for family. Instead we could simply stay in our pjs and watch the wonder and excitement that can only be seen through a child's eyes. No, Chance did not know it was Christmas exactly....but he knew for sure it was a special day that he got to play non stop with Mom and Dad. Oh what fun! The biggest hit of them all was the ATW Radio Flyer wagon that Santa (aka Daddy) put together and had waiting under the tree Christmas morning! Chance has LOVED ridding around the house in it shaking his jingle bells!
On Christmas eve we were able to attend the Family Service at our church. It really was perfect for families. The message of Jesus' birth was told on a child's level and they gave out glow sticks (instead of a candle). It was so fun to see all the children mesmerized by the glow sticks across the sanctuary.
As for me the message brought about an entirely new perspective. As I sat there watching my precious son, whom I love with every ounce of my being, I thought about Mary. She too loved her son so deeply the day he was born and every day after. She knew he was special and yet she had to watch as he was tortured, persecuted and killed. Suddenly, I not only was immensely greatful for the sacrifice Christ made for me...I was greatful to Mary, his earthly mother too.
So, this Christmas was different. But in many ways it gave us the opportunity to truly remember what the season is about.
On a not so serious note....here are some fun pics from the day!
